Amazon seller insurance: the $1M requirement and how to upload your COI
Amazon requires US sellers to carry commercial liability insurance of at least $1 million per occurrence and $1 million in aggregate once gross proceeds pass $10,000 in a month. You then have 30 days to get the policy and upload the certificate of insurance (COI) in Seller Central.
Since November 2, 2026, the sales threshold no longer applies to listings in categories with enhanced safety listing requirements. Amazon names children's products, cosmetic and ingestible products, and lithium battery products. If you list in one of them, you need the $1 million policy now, at any sales level.
Walmart Marketplace asks for a COI once you pass $100,000 in sales in any 12 months. Etsy and Shopify do not require insurance in their terms.
| Marketplace | When you need a policy | Minimum limits | Additional insured on the certificate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon | Over $10,000 in gross proceeds in a month, or any listing in an enhanced safety category (from November 2, 2026) | $1M per occurrence, $1M aggregate | Amazon.com Services LLC and its affiliates and assignees |
| Walmart Marketplace | Over $100,000 in GMV in any 12 months, or when Walmart notifies you | $1M per occurrence, $2M aggregate, general and product liability | Walmart Inc., its subsidiaries and its affiliates |
| Etsy | No requirement in the Terms of Use | None set | None set |
| Shopify | No requirement in the Terms of Service | None set | None set |
What the Amazon policy must include
- Commercial general liability, umbrella or excess liability, written on an occurrence basis.
- At least $1 million per occurrence and $1 million in aggregate, covering every product you list on Amazon.com.
- Amazon.com Services LLC and its affiliates and assignees named as additional insured.
- The insured name matches the legal entity name in your Seller Central Account Info.
- An insurer rated A- or better by S&P or AM Best.
- At least 30 days' notice to Amazon before the insurer cancels or does not renew.
- No deductible for most sellers. If your gross proceeds passed $1 million in the last 12 months, Amazon allows a deductible of up to $10,000 when the COI lists it.
What changed on November 2, 2026
Amazon announced two additions on its Seller Forums news account. The $10,000 trigger and the $1 million limits stay the same for everyone else.
- Listings in categories with enhanced safety listing requirements need the $1 million policy regardless of sales. The rule covers new and existing listings.
- Sellers based in Mainland China must buy the policy through the Amazon Insurance Accelerator. Amazon rejects other new policies from those sellers. Delegance cannot place that policy.
How to upload your COI in Seller Central
- Log in to Seller Central.
- Go to Settings, then Account Info, then Business Insurance.
- Upload the certificate of insurance.
- Enter the insurer name, policy number, start and end dates, and the coverage amount.
- Check that the insured name matches the legal entity on your account.
How to send Walmart your COI
Walmart emails you when your account needs a COI. The Retailer Agreement gives you up to 30 days from that notice to get coverage. The certificate must list your legal business name as it appears in Seller Center.
- Open the Seller Liability Insurance page in Seller Center.
- Select Upload certificate and add the COI as a PDF of 10MB or less.
- Select Upload certificate again to finish.
Etsy and Shopify
Neither platform sets an insurance requirement. Etsy's Terms of Use say a buyer must bring a product claim against the seller, not Etsy. Shopify's Terms of Service make you indemnify Shopify for claims that come from your sales. Either way, a claim about your product lands on you.
How Delegance helps
We quote general liability with product coverage from several carriers, put the exact additional insured wording on the certificate, and send a new COI whenever a marketplace or a retailer asks. You can request a certificate from the portal, by email or in chat.
Common questions
- Do I need general liability insurance to sell on Amazon?
- Yes, once your gross proceeds pass $10,000 in a month, or right away if you list in a category with enhanced safety listing requirements. Amazon requires at least $1 million per occurrence and in aggregate, and you have 30 days to upload the COI.
- Does the Amazon policy have to be occurrence-based?
- Yes. Amazon accepts commercial general, umbrella or excess liability written on an occurrence basis. A claims-made policy does not meet the requirement.
- What does additional insured mean for Amazon?
- It extends your policy to Amazon for claims about your products. The certificate must name Amazon.com Services LLC and its affiliates and assignees.
- What deductible does Amazon allow?
- Zero for most sellers. If your gross proceeds passed $1 million in the last 12 months, the policy may carry a deductible of up to $10,000, listed on the COI.
- Do Etsy or Shopify require insurance?
- No. Neither platform's terms require a policy. You still answer for claims about the products you sell.
